Four pathway sailors have been selected as PASS recipients for 2025, where they will be provided opportunities to access subsidised additional training and support through the Performance Academy programmes. We are proud to share that one of these sailors is Alex Jones!
What first sparked your passion for sailing, and how did you get started?
It all started when I was 7 years old, sailing an old, battered AB dinghy at Parkstone. The coolest part? They used to throw sweets at me to make me go faster! I mean, what kid wouldn’t love that? Even now I love the challenge to go faster.
What has been your most memorable experience on the water so far?
It has to be the sheer thrill of screaming with joy while sailing a WASZP, or the incredible feeling of crossing the finish line at the 2023 Topper World Championships and realising I had won, I was the World Champion!
How do you hope this scholarship will help you achieve your sailing goals?
I’m entering the WASZP Games with less than 6 months experience in the boat, I need to warp speed my learning. I want to be pushed to be the best I can be.
When you’re not sailing, what are some of your other hobbies or interests?
I’m creative, I like working with wood, carving out model boats, it’s good on the brain! Plus, running, cycling, keeping fit. Love a good plank competition.
Who or what inspires you most in your sailing journey and why?
My grandad, he sailed around the world. He’s 86 but if he had a WASZP, he’d still try and beat me! His passion, joy of sailing and competitive spirit.
If you could sail anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Australia, Sydney Harbour.
What’s your go-to sailing snack or drink when you are on the water?
A Lidl muesli bar is an essential in my buoyancy aid. Drinking enough water is a struggle for me, I’m hoping some mentoring with the scholarship might change my bad habits.
If you could have any sailing-related superpower, what would it be?
Wind Power, so I can control the shifts.
